Making it Personal

Making it Personal is a project funded by the Department for Education (DfE) whch aims to provide support and advice about personalisation and personal budgets to parents and carers of disabled children and young people and commissioners.

Case studies

In Control was asked by the charity KIDS to develop case studies on families using personal budgets across England to support the Making it Personal project.

The case studies desribe how some families have used personal budgets in imaginative ways to meet the requirements of their disabled child.

You can read the case studies here

Handbook for parents

In addition to the case studies, the Making it Personal project included the development of a handbook for parents whose children are in receipt of personal budgets.

E-learning package

An e-learning package for parents and carers is also under development and due for release in 2013. The package will be supported by regional events.

Guidance for Commissioners

The Office of Public Management has developed guidance for commissioners to support the implementation of whole system changes, which are required in order to make personalisation and personal budgets possible for disabled children and young people.

Future work

KIDS has received further DfE funding to work on a personal budgets readiness programme during 2013/14.  Specific projects include:

  • To develop guidance for providers on how to become personal budget ready for September 2014 through downloadable pdf and elearning resources - In Control is leading this piece of work on behalf of KIDS.
  • To explore how providers can work with families who wish to combine their personal budgets. In Control is leading this piece of work on behalf of KIDS.
  • Updating the guidance for commissioners.  OPM is leading on this piece of work on behalf of KIDS including working with providers.

OPM and In Control are collaborating on taking this work forward to ensure that we encourage commissioners and providers to work together.  We are always interested in hearing about innovative work with commissioners and providers.  If you are aware of work that could be included as an exemplar in the next iteration of the commissioners guidance please contact Claire Lazarus.

KIDS colleagues will be building on the above work to refresh and extend guidance and elearning on personal budgets for families.
