Using in Control materials

In Control owns the copyright to all its published materials but you are able to use these materials under certain conditions:

  1. If you are someone who needs support you can use the materials for free.
  2. In Control also offers those people wanting to establish or promote Individual Budgets and Self-Directed Support the opportunity to use in Control materials. But you must comply with the conditions below.

As the publisher of this work, in Control encourages people who need support, their supporters, and those authorities wanting to establish a system of Self-Directed Support to access in Control content electronically:
    Individuals
    If you are an individual and you direct your own support, or if you’re thinking about directing your support, you can use everything on the website for free. The same goes for a person’s supporters – for example, family members, friends, brokers, community members.
    Local authorities
    If you represent a local authority and you want to use materials to set up a system of Self-Directed Support or promote citizenship, you can only use them if your authority is a member of In Control. Information about membership is available from: admin@in-control.org.uk. Any use of the materials for the purposes of establishing a system of Self-Directed Support (or any aspect of it) if your authority is not a member of In Control will be considered as a breach of these copyright conditions.
    Consultants, training organisations, service providers
    If you represent a training or consultancy organisation or a service provider (or other similar organisation) to help statutory authorities or any independent organisation to set up a system of, or any aspect of, Self-Directed Support or Individual Budgets, you  are only permitted to use In Control materials if you have an agreement with In Control. For more details, contact admin@in-control.org.uk. Any use of the materials for direct financial gain without an agreement with In Control, will be considered as a breach of these copyright conditions.
    Academics and students
    If you are an academic or student studying some aspect of Self-Directed Support, welfare reform or citizenship you can use In Control's materials as long as you fully credit In Control.

These rules have been set by In Control as part of our mission to promote citizenship and community. The rules are based on our current understanding of how to strengthen and sustain a creative and self-sustaining network for social innovation. We maintain the right to change these rules if we find that there are better rules for improving practice and strengthening our community.

Downloading and distributing materials

If you comply with the conditions above, you are welcome to download, save, or distribute materials - electronically or on paper - without written permission providing that:
  1. You credit in Control
  2. You use this phrase to credit in Control: ‘This guide/paper/document/presentation etc. was produced by in Control www.in-control.org.uk’
  3. Any other phrases you use to credit in Control must make clear that in Control is the publisher of the material
  4. You feature the address of the in Control website: www.in-control.org.uk.

Adapting materials

Local authorities or other organisations taking part in the establishment or promotion of a system of Self-Directed Support may also adapt In Control's materials for use locally on condition that:
  1. You credit in Control
  2. The adapted material makes clear that it is an adaptation of an In Control material, and
  3. You use this phrase to credit in Control: ‘This guide/paper/document/presentation/ etc. was adapted from materials produced by in Control www.in-control.org.uk
  4. You do not claim exclusive copyright of the material
  5. You feature the address of the in Control website: www.in-control.org.uk.
  6. A copy of the adapted material must be sent to In Control with the understanding that it can be published by In Control so that others might benefit from it as an open source publication

In Control aims to build a community of citizens who share a common goal of developing, sharing and testing the best approaches and building a stronger community that welcomes and embraces difference. If new material improves on older material then In Control will seek to share the new material and will make clear which individual or organisation improved it.

Use of the In Control logo

In Control's members can use In Control's logo when sharing materials, running events or otherwise promoting Self-Directed Support, citizenship and stronger communities.

Organisations or individuals who are not members of In Control but who want to express support for In Control's values and practices are also free to use the logo as long as they do not break the following rules:
  1. You must not describe yourself as In Control or as a representative of In Control
  2. You must not apply the logo to materials in any way that might imply joint ownership, publication or accreditation by In Control
  3. You must not suggest you have the approval of In Control or that you have a closer working relationship than is agreed by In Control

Scotland, Cymru, Northern Ireland, Australia

If you are in Scotland, Cymru, Northern Ireland or Australia and wish to use In Control’s materials, the conditions set out in this document apply equally. Membership and partnership, as well as any adaptation of materials must be must be agreed with the independent In Control organisation in those countries.
