In Community
In Control and its partners created a new system of social care - Self-Directed Support. But the
point of Self-Directed Support is that people should be able to live
real lives - with friends and neighbours - playing an active role in
their community.

This isn't just for people who can access
Self-Directed Support. The aim of our Community Strategy is to think BIG - about
'whole communities'. Playing an active part in their community is a
right that everybody should enjoy.
If you are a Local Authority/PCT member of In Control there is a programme you can join to look at how to build stronger communities - and harness the strengths of communities to your efforts to deliver valuable outcomes for people - see
Stronger Communities
Project. We are also supporting co-ordination of a (JIP) Joint Improvement Partnership funded project across
Yorkshire and Humberside to generate investment in and improved understanding of strategies that build stronger communities.
A joint project with the RSA (Royal Society of Arts) involves working with voluntary organisations and citizens in local communities to help us understand the challenges facing people with a diversity of needs in seeking to engage with local supports and opportunties. We are currently looking for voluntary sector organisations and individuals who would like to be part of this.
If you have an interest in building stronger communities, or in how personalised approaches that support citizenship can help to build stronger communities, we would like to discuss your ideas with you. Please get in touch with John.Gillespie@in-control.org.uk
