Sharing Knowledge is a course designed for parents or relatives
of disabled children over 16 years old to help them to plan their
children's futures.
Current guidance and thinking means that in the future support
services will develop to suit the individual needs of people who
require health and social care support. It is recommended that
service providers and the voluntary sector consult and work in
partnership with disabled people and their families. Therefore it
is important that people and their families are able to fulfil this
role.
Course aims
Sharing Knowledge aims to equip course participants with the
latest leading edge information and an understanding about the
history and perceptions of disabled people, to enable participants
to aid in the development of how health and social care will be
delivered in the future.
How is the course delivered?
The course consists of five sessions which run over 10 days.
Each session is two days long and covers issues that are important
to disabled people and their families.
The teaching method is informal and highly participative.
Information is given in an accessible by videos, group discussions,
presentations and speakers.
The course holds up to 25 participants.
Course content
Topics on the course include:
- The history of the parents movement and self-advocacy.
- The history of how disabled people have been supported
- How services are delivered locally
- Getting the right support for people
- Communication and assistive technology
- Making change happen locally and nationally
- Person centred planning
