This project focused upon two key questions: what role if any
professional social workers might have in supporting citizens to
take control of their own support; and what skills do social
workers need to carry out this role.
The papers attached address these issues. The view arrived
at was that professionally trained and accredited social workers do
have a valuable contribution to make; but the emphasis and focus of
their work needs to change. Work in the London Borough of
Newham by Andrew Tyson and Bronwen Williams with a small group of
social work staff examined the 'emotional depths' of social
workers' engagement with this process, and the relevant paper is
