Project 4: Care Management and Social Work Systems

Project led by Andrew Tyson

This project focused upon two key questions: what role if any professional social workers might have in supporting citizens to take control of their own support; and what skills do social workers need to carry out this role.

The papers attached address these issues.  The view arrived at was that professionally trained and accredited social workers do have a valuable contribution to make; but the emphasis and focus of their work needs to change.  Work in the London Borough of Newham by Andrew Tyson and Bronwen Williams with a small group of social work staff examined the 'emotional depths' of  social workers' engagement with this process, and the relevant paper is included.

The work was also used in In Control's Workforce and Social Work seminar, details of which can be found here.
