Next webinar - Personal health budgets and mental health: Getting ready and getting it right

Presented by Vidhya Alakeson, Mental Health Lead for the Personal Health Budgets Delivery Programme for NHS England and Alex MyCawka, personal health budget recipient

Wednesday 7th May, 10am to 11am

This webinar will introduce the NHS England programme exploring how personal health budgets can work for more people using mental health services.

The 18-month programme which started in December 2013 is being led by Vidhya Alakeson and involves  working with seven demonstrator sites to understand more about how personal health budgets can be financially sustained and how more clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), providers and clinicians can be encouraged to use them.

Those taking part will also be using the opportunity of the programme to explore whether personal health budgets can help reduce A&E attendances, help people get treatment nearer home, help those who misuse substances and those who regularly attend A&E due to self-harm.

From April 2015, people with long term conditions, such as mental health needs, will be given the option of a personal health budget and Care and Support Minister Norman Lamb has shown clear support for the use of personal budgets for mental health: "We want everyone to have better care that is built around their individual needs. Personal health budgets are part of our drive to give people who need the most help more choice and control over their care and support."

"I'm pleased to see the work that NHS England are doing with Clinical Commissioning Groups on the use of personal health budgets within mental health services. I hope that the experience drawn from this work will help to enable the roll out of their use in mental health services across the country."

This webinar will introduce the work undertaken in the programme so far and present learning from the personal health budget pilot programme about effectively implementing personal health budgets for mental health services.

Alex MyCawka from Northamptonshire will be presenting with Vidhya to talk about his personal experience of using a personal health budget.

The seven sites taking part in the programme include:

  • Devon Partnership NHS Trust and Positive Opportunities for Wellbeing CIC
  • Dorset CCG
  • South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Addictions Clinical Academic Group
  • Stockport CCG and Stockport Council
  • Southwark CCG and Southwark Council
  • South Coast Kent CCG
  • South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust and Kingston CCG and Royal Borough of Kingston

A further six sites which are less advanced in the introduction of personal health budgets but want to offer personal health budgets as an option for people using mental health services are also taking part in the programme.

The programme has been part of the NHS England 'Going Further Faster' programme for CCGs
