An alternative guide to the NHS

On the 5th July the NHS turned 65. To both celebrate this major milestone, and put into context the changes that are occurring now, the Kings Fund has put together an alternative guide to the new NHS.

Throughout it's 65-year history, the NHS has undergone numerous changes. And today's NHS is no different. The recent Health and Social Care Act has introduced some of the most wide-ranging reforms to the NHS since it was founded in 1948.

To help you understand these new changes and how the new look NHS fits together, the Kings Fund worked with the NHS to develop an animation that takes what is a complex restructure and shows it in a simplified, easy to digest format.

The animation was developed after positive feedback from a session delivered to clinicians as part of a leadership development programme. Clinicians found it incredibly useful in helping them see the 'bigger picture'. While often they understood their own 'area' they were less clear about how the whole, complex system fit together.

The animation takes inspiration from this session, enabling it to be delivered to a wider audience as well providing a digestible overview of the changes to the NHS, showing how they are as much a product of politics and circumstance as design.
